The Portland Japanese Garden
The Portland Japanese Garden is located at 611 Southwest Kingston Avenue in Portland, Oregon but if you woke there from a deep sleep you might think you were in Japan. This Japanese garden is in agreement with nature. With the thoughtful use of stones, plants and water, areas of tranquil and calm beauty transpire. These quiet places in the garden lend themselves to contemplation and meditation. The five and a half acre Japanese Garden is composed of five distinct garden styles.
The Flat Garden (Hira-niwa)
The size of the Flat Garden at the Portland Japanese Garden is amazing. Of the five gardens, this is the most formal, it encompasses the hundred-floormat Pavilion hall. Deep evergreen shrubbery is distinct against the white shirakawa sand that’s raked carefully representing a ripple in the water. The ocean of sand and its wonderful plantings show the four seasons. This is a Japanses Garden of perfect, meditative harmony.

The Strolling Pond Garden (Chisen-kaiyu-shiki)
This is the biggest of the five gardens. The Wisteria Arbor is a entryway to the garden's centerpiece, an antique five-tiered pagoda lantern given to Portland in 1963 by the city of Sapporo, Japan.
The Tea Garden (Roji-niwa)
Two small gardens line the pathway to the ceremonial Tea House, called Ka-Shin-Tei (Flower Heart House). The Outer Garden (Soto-roji) has an old-fashioned well plus a waiting station that’s sheltered for the Tea Ceremony. The Inner Garden (Uchi-roji) encircles the Tea House in a modest, private ambiance. Plantings in the Tea Garden are not flashy, as nothing is meant to take away from the peaceful aspect of the ritual of tea.
The Natural Garden (Shukei-en)
Wind your way down the south hillside to the Natural Garden. Here you will discover ponds, waterfalls, and shallow streams as they meander under tiny bridges. Trees, shrubs, ferns, and mosses grow in their natural state. Along the path, visitors will come upon a carved-stone roadside guardian. This figure is Jizo, the kindly Bodhisattva who protects travelers, children, and all those in need. In many ways the Natural Garden is the most intimate of the five Gardens.
The Sand and Stone Garden (Kare-san-sui, Zen-niwa)
Sand and Stones gardens are most abstract of the Japanese Garden forms; the Portland Japanese Garden is no exception. It reveals the utter simplicity of worn stones rising from an ocean of raked sand. This garden style is typical of those found in Zen monasteries.
